BOEING CEMENTS FOOTHOLD IN LOWCOUNTRY WITH FACILITY PURCHASE

Gov. Mark Sanford today recognized Boeing's growing foothold in South Carolina with the company's decision to acquire Alenia North America's half of the existing fuselage assembly facility in North Charleston, making Boeing the facility's sole owner as construction begins for another 787 Dreamliner full production line next door.

"What is important to remember is that Boeing's decisive landing in South Carolina has not been a five month but indeed a five year story. This story began in 2005 with Italian aircraft maker Alenia joining Vought Aircraft in putting down roots in North Charleston, and in that light, I'd not only thank Commerce Secretary Joe Taylor and his stellar team for their unflagging efforts, but also spotlight former Commerce Secretary Bob Faith for his early vision in this process. I'd also recognize Giuseppe Giordo and Vincenzo Caiazzo of Alenia, and Tom Risley of Vought, all three of whom were decisive in their commitment to North Charleston in conversations that ranged from Rome to Dallas to Mobile and more, and I'd thank them again for the generational dividends that will no doubt come as a result of their decisions.

"We've said repeatedly that this massive investment in South Carolina's competitive future is transformational not only for the thousands of jobs and hundreds of millions in investment - in fact, the largest announcement in state history - but also for the way it will spur on an already growing aerospace hub in our state. That said, I'm happy to join existing Boeing employees in the Lowcountry, local leaders in North Charleston and beyond, and people from across this state in again welcoming Boeing to South Carolina."
